Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening (bleaching) is a safe and effective cosmetic enhancer.  Teeth whitening is an easy and inexpensive way too make you look younger and more attractive.  As we age, our teeth naturally darken up to one shade every five years. The chemicals in foods and drink such as coffee, tea, wine, soda and fruit juices also contribute to stained teeth. Other contributing factors are tobacco use, some medications, illnesses, previous dental work and genetics.

Teeth whitening is one of our most requested procedures.  It involves two short visits.  On the first visit, the doctor evaluates your teeth, gums and existing restorations to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure.  Bleaching works on your natural teeth, and we will want to match any new restorations to your new smile.  We'll take impressions of your teeth to make you thin clear plastic customized trays that hold the whitening solution.  We'll also record your initial shade for your "before and after" comparison.

At the second visit, we'll make sure your trays fit you perfectly and give you instructions on how to use the bleach.  The bleach is a professional grade of carbamine peroxide which when broken down releases  oxygen.  When the oxygen reaches the enamel and dentin, it "bleaches" out the discolorations.  The Opalescence system we use is the only one with the ADA seal of approval. The solution is placed in the trays, and you wear the trays for 1 hour daily for 10-14 days.  Most people notice results within a day or two and dramatic results are usually seen in 1-2 weeks.  Some post whitening sensitivity is normal and and will subside after use.  The solution that we use has ingredients that help prevent sensitivity.

You keep the trays and touch up your teeth as needed.  Most people touch up every 6 months to every couple of years depending on your staining and desired whiteness.  The touch ups usually only take a day or two.

In a hurry for your new bright smile?  We can use a stronger solution in the office and get results within an hour or so.  We isolate your teeth with a rubber dam to apply the stronger solution on your teeth.  We also will make trays for you to take home for touch ups.
